The Foundry offers innovative, hands-on, active-learning opportunities for youth in all our makerspace areas - Technology, Textiles, Metal and Wood. Students develop new skills in our shops and labs. Young people collaborate on interactive projects, master new technologies, deepen important areas of interest, and explore new career possibilities.

Youth Entrepreneurship Afterschool Program

Program Description: In this program, students make items to sell using The Foundry's tech and textile labs. They learn about business and earn money from e-commerce and in-person market sales. This program is FREE to all Buffalo Public and Charter School students. Made possible through the generous support of Ciminelli Real Estate Corporation.

Afterschool Days: Tuesday and Thursdays, 4PM-6PM

Age Range: 10th and 11th graders

Program Dates: September 21st through December 16th

*Saturday December 18th - students will also be asked to attend and sell at our Annual Holiday Market.

Tech + Art - TA Training Program

Program Description: Students in this program earn a paid stipend for participation! We'll use micro-computers and motion sensors, 3D print objects we design, and attend sessions on-site to support a deep understanding of art + tech in order to build a sculptural installation that uses inputs and action. Together we'll explore basic coding to make interactive systems operate. With these STEAM-related skills secured, students will be supported to cooperatively lead educational sessions as Teaching Assistants helping our younger students (7th graders) investigate art & technology, coding & interactivity. This program is FREE to Buffalo Public and Charter School students who identify as she/they with support provided from The AAUW.

Afterschool Days: Tuesday and Thursdays, 3:30PM-5:30PM

Age Range: 10th and 11th graders, students who identify as she/they

Making + Manufacturing Program

Program Description: In this ~18 week program at The Foundry, students learn about using tools for small-batch manufacturing and computer assisted machining (metal fabrication, CO2 lasers, cnc equipment, soldering, etc). At the end of the program, participants will have a strong understanding of the wide range of career and employment options in making/local manufacturing. Successful completion qualifies students as Certified Manufacturing Associates (a ToolingU-SME certification). Graduates of the program select either a 4-week paid internship placement at a partnering manufacturing company or maintain a paid placement onsite in FoundryMade, our social enterprise.

Program Days: Monday through Thursday, 12:30-3:30pm (with potential for additional paid opportunities outside of program hours).

Age Range: 18-25

Program Dates: September 13th 2021 and runs through mid February 2022 (including internship)

Afterschool & Select Weekends

Programs at The Foundry support computer- assisted-design and making in all four of our makerspaces. Thanks to grant-funding, student groups from Buffalo neighborhoods join us for afterschool classes. Offerings combine art, computing & craft, or STEAM (Science,Technology, Engineering, Art and Math).

Workforce Development Day Programs

Partnering with local schools and agencies, we offer day programs that equip students to build projects for the community. Students explore exciting areas for future career opportunities or fulfill Career Development & Occupational Studies (CDOS) requirements.
